What would you do?
If you had an opportunity to start your own business and at the same time were offered a job by an organization you admire, what would you do? How would you go about making the decision.
So here’s the scenario. I’ve been freelancing for the past few years, and except for the lack of steady paycheck, I’ve been really enjoying it. I can work whenever I want and for however long I want. Of course I make my schedule around my clients, but most of their demands are usually quite reasonable. Recently I have been weighing the pros and cons of incorporating and was going to get more information about it so that I can take my business to the next level. In the meantime, I have won 2 fantastic contracts which will require quite a bit of my time which means I will have to defer the incorporation, etc.
To make matters more interesting, I have been invited to interview for a job with an organization I admire and for a position I am qualified for. Obviously nothing is guaranteed with this interview, but it gets me thinking about what I value in a work environment. I love my freelancing / self-employed freedom, although I lack the steady income, benefits, interaction with colleagues, etc. I’m not sure how I will fit in to a very strict, union environment, hierarchical structure with very specific, rigid guidelines.
Thinking back to my last “real” job, it was also a very strict, hierarchical institution that had some realistic but also many unrealistic expectations. I found it hard to operate that way because I knew I had good ideas and I could make them work if everyone just let me do them, instead of going from meeting to meeting trying to explain and justify what needed to be done. I suppose its not the worst kind of environment, it just takes some getting used to. I admire people who work in such environments, although they are miserable, because they have made the decision that benefits and a pension are more important to them.
I suppose I have nothing to worry about now. I just need to go to the interview with an open mind and perform to the best of my abilities. If and when the time comes for me to choose between freelance and full-time job, I will weigh the pros and cons and make my decision. In the meantime, I would love to know what your thoughts are. Have you ever been faced with such a dilemma? How did you make your decision? If you were me, what would you do?

Publisher … in training!
Last year I created an organizational chart for my future empire. One of the organizations I named Susu Publishing. It will encapsulate all things related to writing, editing and publishing. Therefore I have named this blog Susu Publishing as it is the first step toward my publishing empire.
My intent in this blog is to:
- write about writing;
- have guests blog on all things related to writing and writers;
- provide info or articles that may be of interest to like minded individuals;
- learn from feedback and comments.
I certainly hope you join me in this journey.
